Description:  As part of the rennovations of the former Western State Hospital (later Staunton Correctional Center) into shockingly expensive condos and offices the former power plant is going to be turned into a bar/restraunt. How would you like to live in a former prison/mental hospital - if you have $400,000 you can in Staunton. Actually, the former Western State Hosptial campus is really beautiful - it is so pretty that it was even pretty when it was used as a prison - it originally opened in the 1820s and is listed on the National Historic List

Coal Unloaders for former Western State Hospital Power Plant
Title:  Coal Unloaders for former Western State Hospital Power Plant
Description:  The power plant is planned to become a restraunt/bar as part of the rennovations of the former Western State Hospital campus into offices/shops/condos. The property is on the national and Virginia historic registries including the National Historic List, so the renovations are protecting the historic character of the property. The original Western State campus might be the prettiest former mental hospital in existance - one wonders when St Elizabeth's in Washington, DC will be turned into condos - most of St Elizabeth's campus is no longer used by the hospital and it is similarly beautiful and has stunning views of Washington, DC. It would have been turned into million dollar condos a long time ago if it wasn't located in the hood - but Anacostia is getting revitalized now, so its inevitable that developers will eye St Elizabeth's for adaptive reuse (since it is a National Historic List listed property, they will have to preserve the original buildings and character of the property).

Ex-Southern Yard
Title:  Ex-Southern Yard
Description:  The Southern Freight Station was one block north of this location - the passenger station (Union Station between the B&O and Southern) was a few blocks south of here (now the Harrisonburg-Rockingham County Jail is on that location) it was the end of a branch line from Manassas to Harrisonburg. The B&O originally had trackage rights over this line to connect their line from Winchester to Front Royal with a line from Harrisonburg to Lexington. Orignally that line was supposed to extend to Roanoke, but it was never completed south of Lexington. The trackage rights were extinquished when the B&O sold their line south of Harrisonburg in the 1940s to the Chesapeake Western, a short line which connected with the N&W at Elkton. Originally, the CHW went into West Virginia to carry lumber and a former rock quarry. When the rock quarry closed, the line was abandoned past Bridgewater - now the line ends at a grain facility near Dayton. The N&W bought the Chesapeake Western, but it was never incorporated into the line. Even after the N&W-Southern Merger, the Chesapeake Western remained listed as a separate railroad. Even today, the Norfolk Southern office in Harrisonburg carries the CHW logo rather than the NS logo and CHW was at least up to a couple of years ago still listed as a subsidiary of NS. Not sure why, the line is less than 20 miles long.
